Background of the Study:
The Internet of Things (IoT) is revolutionizing the retail banking sector by enabling real-time monitoring and enhanced security through interconnected devices. In Kaduna State, Polaris Bank is exploring the integration of IoT solutions to bolster its security systems and safeguard customer assets. IoT devices—such as smart cameras, sensors, and connected ATMs—provide continuous data streams that help monitor bank premises and detect anomalies in real time. This technological innovation is crucial in preventing security breaches, unauthorized access, and potential fraud, thereby protecting both physical assets and digital transactions (Adebayo, 2023). The implementation of IoT in banking not only improves security but also enhances operational efficiency by automating routine monitoring tasks. Furthermore, the data generated by IoT devices can be integrated with advanced analytics platforms to predict potential threats and initiate proactive responses. Despite these advantages, the adoption of IoT in retail banking is accompanied by challenges such as data privacy concerns, high implementation costs, and the need for robust cybersecurity measures to protect the interconnected network. Polaris Bank’s initiative reflects a strategic effort to leverage IoT for creating a secure and efficient banking environment, yet the practical challenges of integrating such technology with existing legacy systems and ensuring consistent performance across all branches remain significant. This study investigates the adoption of IoT in enhancing retail banking security at Polaris Bank, analyzing its impact on threat detection, response times, and overall security efficiency, while also identifying barriers to its effective implementation (Okafor, 2023).
Statement of the Problem:
Although Polaris Bank has initiated the adoption of IoT devices to enhance security, several challenges impede its full effectiveness. Technical integration issues, high deployment costs, and vulnerabilities associated with interconnected systems present significant obstacles. Inconsistent performance of IoT devices across different branches, coupled with potential data breaches, has raised concerns about the reliability of IoT-based security solutions. Additionally, customer and regulatory apprehensions regarding data privacy and the security of IoT networks further complicate implementation efforts. These challenges result in a gap between the anticipated security benefits of IoT and the actual operational performance, potentially leaving the bank exposed to new types of cyber and physical threats. Furthermore, the lack of standardized protocols for IoT integration in banking exacerbates these issues, making it difficult to achieve a uniform level of security across all operational units. This study aims to identify the critical barriers to effective IoT adoption in retail banking security at Polaris Bank and to propose strategic solutions that address both technical and regulatory concerns, ensuring that IoT technology can be leveraged to its full potential to safeguard banking operations (Chinwe, 2023).
Objectives of the Study:
• To evaluate the adoption and integration of IoT technology in retail banking security at Polaris Bank.
• To identify the key technical and regulatory challenges affecting IoT implementation.
• To recommend strategies for optimizing IoT solutions to enhance security effectiveness.
Research Questions:
• How is IoT technology being integrated into Polaris Bank’s security systems?
• What are the major challenges impeding effective IoT adoption in retail banking security?
• What measures can improve the reliability and privacy of IoT-based security systems?
